Marijuana (cannabis, hemp, weed, fu, dope, pot, ganja…) is a harmless, widely distributed herb with a specific smell and interesting effects on the human body (if used properly). Usually, it is used for getting high or stoned, depends on the amount. Also, people were making strong ropes, tip-top paper, oil and cloth out of it aforetime. Beside this, long ago cannabis was used for medical purposes and now is coming back in this sphere.
The principle of effect is next: evolution gave marijuana the ability of secreting tar to keep the pollen on flowers, to protect the plant from extra ultra-violet beaming and from herbivores, which contains pretty big amount of cannabinoids; human body has cannabinoid receptors in its nervous system (CB1) and the rest of the body (CB2); the impact of cannabinoids on the nervous system causes unusual effects such as euphoria, elation, reducing of ability to concentrate, more clear and powerful sense of taste, sound, smell, etc. Physiological manifestations are: red eyes, dry mouth, permanent hunger, heart palpitations, muscle relaxation, a gleam in the eyes, and other.
First of all, marijuana is an exquisite anesthetic (in case of drug tolerance absence). It is also an antiemetic, appetite stimulant, sedative and so on. Smoking cannabis causes lower intraocular pressure, which is helpful in glaucoma treatment. Epilepsy attack reducing was seen. Cannabis products are effective in the symptomatic treatment of the widest range of different diseases.
In recent years, cannabis is actively used in Canada and many US states as a medicine. There is even a science – “cannabinology”, and specialists who can select appropriate stuff for a specific disease. But still, for some reason, the development of this industry is hampered by the government.
In addition to Canada and the US, in this field of activity with grief in half are moving Britain, Israel, Czech Republic, Holland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Austria and other countries. Incidentally, many patients who use medical marijuana in the United States and Canada, do not suffer from serious illnesses and smoke for pleasure - in fact, get a prescription is not very hard there.
Some Myths about Weed
In connection with its tangled history, marijuana embossed with plenty of untruthful facts, forced by governments and media. The first bans began to appear when the pot was a threat to pharmacists and manufacturers of tissue and wood paper. And the appearance of these prohibitions, of course, was accompanied by the appearance of nonsense issued as the truth to people. Fundamentally wrong studies with advantageous for those who forced false facts results took place.
For example, “scientists” were injecting enormous doses of cannabinoids into apes all at once. Naturally, after such experience brain damage will not be avoided and the conclusion of this research was “marijuana kills brain”.
The most popular myths are:
- Marijuana causes addiction. Almost fiction. Permanent smoking during a long period will cause light withdrawal syndrome after quitting, which lasts 2-3 days (admit, there is nothing to do with legal alcohol and tobacco). But a smoker must spend a lot of time, money and energy to reach such condition.
- Marijuana damages brain. Much time passed since the opposite was proved: an adult person physically can’t smoke so much to provoke long-term brain changes. However, kids and teens might be endangered.
- Marijuana makes you lazy. A cause and consequence are confused, namely, not MJ makes people lazy, but lazy people just like to get high. In fact, if you use it with the relaxation after work purposes, you can be even more productive than non-smoking people as it helps to fight stresses and fatigue.
- Marijuana causes lung cancer. It is not even close to tobacco. According to research, in the countries where it is allowed, the correlation between lung cancer and smoking cannabis was not found.
- People die from the marijuana overdose. Nope. The therapeutic index for cannabis is 1000:1, which means that the average human being have to consume almost 4 kilograms of classy weed at once to die of it. For comparison, the same index for alcohol is 10:1 and for heroin – 6:1.
The Real Scathe
Truly, the greatest danger associated with hemp is to get caught with it. Still, there is bad influence our subject may cause. Excessive consumption of it may bring up a motivational syndrome, short-time memory deterioration and drug tolerance (there will be no more effect from smoking). Also, a recent research found out that regular consumers are prone to suffer from gums diseases. That’s all. No one ever died from smoking MJ.
Positive and Negative Sides of Legalization
Let’s consider some pros and cons. Human nature makes us crave prohibited things more than if it would be allowed. All the alcohol prohibitions were totally failed during the whole history of them. Then why lawmakers still think that marijuana prohibition will give the opposite results? It is economically ineffective, as all the money spent on weed remain a part of the black market and government can’t impose any taxes on it.
In addition, the tremendous sums are spent on the fight against this plant every year. Such forbiddance causes only losses for the budgets and, consequently, for the citizens. One more economical plus would be new jobs (someone will have to grow and sell herbs), the state will lose the burden of upkeep prisoners, put into jail for marijuana. Also, we have already partially considered the medical use of cannabinoids, which is much wider.
Of course, excessive consumption of cannabis can be dangerous, but excessive consumption of cabbage is dangerous too, this applies to all things which can be consumed. The opponents of legalization affirm that cannabis availability will strengthen interest of people and make it mass.
If weed smoking is welcomed by the state, then those who have never even thought of smoking marijuana will do it. So what? Such arguments will be reasonable only in case of cannabis is very-very dangerous (as alcohol and tobacco), but it’s not. Why do all the legalize opponents never talk about alcohol prohibition? Is there nothing wrong with it?
According to the foregoing arguments, the conclusion will be that there are no reasonable cons of marijuana legalization. All seem-to-be-reasonable opposite arguments are based mostly on fiction and hysteria. And the most advisable problem solution will be not only legalization, but even decriminalization of cannabis, as it is useful not only in relaxation but in medicine and manufacturing.
